This soft, crimson red dessert wine has been produced in Apulia for centuries from Aleatico grapes (85-100%), with the permitted addition of Negroamaro and/or Malvasia Nera and Primitivo (0-15%). The wine is produced throughout the region.

With aging, Aleatico di Puglia DOC develops an extremely delicate bouquet. The color of the wine is a more or less intense ruby red, which gets purple reflections after storage and which turns to orange-red after several years of aging. In addition to its delicate and distinctive scent, the wine has a full-bodied, medium sweet to sweet, soft taste, which is a typical feature of the Aleatico grape.

The wine is made in most parts of Apulia, especially in the provinces of Bari and Brindisi, and there are 3 types available:

  1. Aleatico di Puglia Dolce Naturale DOC (natural sweet), with 15% alcohol content and a legal minimum of 2 years of aging before the wine is released on the market.
  2. Aleatico di Puglia Riserva DOC with a legal minimum of 3 years of aging before releasing on the market.
  3. Aleatico di Puglia Liquoroso DOC is a fortified dessert wine. After harvest, the grapes are slightly dried. The wine must keep an alcohol content of minimum 18.5%. It’s a warm, sweet, balanced and inviting wine. Legal minimum of aging is 5 years before it’s released on the market.

Those wines have a fine aging potential of 10 years or more.
