Subzone:

Friuli Colli Orientali "Rosazzo" DOC

Until 2011, in the main zone of Friuli Colli Orientali DOC (formerly called Colli Orientali del Friuli DOC), there were two subzones, one of them being Rosazzo DOC, especially known for being beautifully situated near the 11th century monastery of the same name, and for the wine, of course.

Rosazzo DOC is located in the southern part of a well-defined area in the Manzano municipality, in the province of Udine, roughly midway between Manzano, known for its production of chairs, and Corno di Rosazzo, located in the northeastern Italian corner, near the border with Slovenia.

Until 2011, Rosazzo DOC produced 2 white wines and 2 red wines. Unfortunately, the introduction of new regulations in October 2011 did not allow the production of the red wine Colli Orientali del Friuli Rosso DOC and of the white Colli Orientali del Friuli Bianco.

We have chosen, however, to present the former types of wine on the following pages bearing their former names.

According to the new regulations, the two previous Rosazzo DOC wines have new requirements, and at the same time there is a new subzone under the Friuli Colli Orientali DOC umbrella. The red wine is Friuli Colli Orientali Rosazzo Pignolo DOC and the white wine is Friuli Colli Orientali Rosazzo Ribolla Gialla DOC.

Finally, the authorities allowed the production of a new interesting white wine, Rosazzo DOCG, based on the local Friulano grape. The new type is an independent white wine, which, despite its name, does not fall under Rosazzo DOC, but in the aforementioned main zone, Friuli Colli Orientali DOC.
