The vineyards of this district are located in a hilly area in the Cuneo province and include six additional municipalities in the province of Asti and seven in the province of Cuneo.

Cisterna is a relatively new DOC area (2002) and it covers only the wine made from the Croatina grape variety. It may seem strange, but it was discovered that it was believed the grape was Bonarda, when in fact it turned out to be Croatina variety.

The grape composition includes, as mentioned, the Croatina grape (80-100%) with the permitted addition of local non-aromatic red varieties (0-15%).

Cisterna d’Asti DOC has a ruby red color and an intense, fruity and characteristic fragrance and a vinous, delicate and harmonious taste which is sometimes bubbly (Vivace).

A Cisterna d'Asti Superiore DOC is also available with a color varying from ruby to garnet with age. The aroma is intense, delicate and distinctive, while the taste is dry, also delicate and harmonious.

The Cisterna Superiore DOC type has a minimum of 12% alcohol content and a mandatory aging period of 10 months starting on November 1st of the harvesting year.
