Not long ago it was believed that the Pelaverga vines grown in the municipality of Verduno near Alba in Piedmont were the same as those grown on the hills of Colline Saluzzesi . In the mid-eighties there were doubts about this, and after thorough research, it was determined that there were actually two different grape varieties, each with its specific characteristics.

In the early 1990s, Pelaverga Piccolo (85-100%) was registered as an independent grape variety, and this decision gave rise to some riots in the street for growers who had invested heart and soul, time and effort in geting this variety accepted for its own qualities.

In 1995 Verduno Pelaverga DOC (Verduno) became reality.

The zone is located in the Barolo district and extends over the vineyards in the municipality of Verduno and parts of the neighboring villages of La Morra and Roddi d'Alba, in the province of Cuneo.

Verduno Pelaverga is a very tasty, dry, red wine, velvety and well balanced, with its own specific characteristics. The color ranges from cherry to ruby red with violet reflections, and the bouquet is intense, sensuous, fragrant and delicately spiced. The taste is dry, fresh, distinctive, soft and harmonious.

This red wine pairs perfectly with the local antipasti dishes with meat, such as raw cod salad from Langhe, beef tongue served with giardino sauce, veal with tuna sauce, vegetable pies, gnocchi and different kinds of risotto.
